USA founding fathers were very wise men. Although many states at the time of federation had major religious people in power, they managed to set up a country with separation of religion and states.
Treaty of Tripoli - Article 11:
As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion; as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquillity, of Mussulmen; and, as the said States never entered into any war, or act of hostility against any Mahometan nation, it is declared by the parties, that no pretext arising from religious opinions, shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries.
"Who does not see that the same authority, which can establish Christianity, in exclusion of all other Religions, may establish with the same ease any particular sect of Christians, in exclusion of all other Sects?" — James Madison (1751-1836) 4th U.S. President, "A Memorial and Remonstrance Against Religious Assessments"
In modern times, we see greed as the main driving moral values in the mind of business leaders. The religious right is trying to dumb down the education system (creation, intelligent design is an example). Churches continue to ripe money from the poor to finance luxury life style of the church leaders. USA foreign debts are in record high. The population lives unsustainably both personally (credit card debts is an indicator) and collectively (we will need at least 3 worlds in order to support USA lifestyle if everyone today lives the same lifestyle as American - Australia is not any better). Jobs are losing to developing countries. The senators and house representatives, most if not all, are openly corrupt - their seats were run with money from special interest.
Is this once great nation going downhill? The frightening fact is that America is still the country with most of the world's weapon of mass destruction.
Is human really so stupid that we cannot see the collapse of our civilisation coming? When climate runs off, it will be too late!
