I would argue that those who see god in everything are the ones who have a problem seeing life`s true value. They`re not able to see the enormous beauty in the immense improbability of our very existence. If god created us all for a purpose, we`re just doing a job, pawns in his cosmic game. But if we just happen be be here by random chance, then the lives we have are truly something to value, enjoy, and celebrate. - raabco

16-month-old boy was denied food and water because he did not say "Amen" at mealtimes

This is a sad story.
Answering to a leader called Queen Antoinette, they [members of One Mind Ministries] denied a 16-month-old boy food and water because he did not say "Amen" at mealtimes. After he died, they prayed over his body for days, expecting a resurrection, then packed it into a suitcase with mothballs. They left it in a shed in Philadelphia, where it remained for a year before detectives found it last spring.

Is the mother guilty of the murder of the poor boy? Psychiatric evaluation found that the mother was not delusional because "she was following a religion". The defense attorney and prosecutors think the mother was brainwashed and should have been found not criminally responsible. In this case, who is responsible?

I don't quite understand god's motive

Canyon Shearer says [in a comment to Evolution: A Fairy Tale For Grownups]:
God created the world for four major purposes:

First is the creativity and power of God; he created an infinitely big universe where no star, no human being, no snowflake is exactly the same as another.

Second is to show us how bad sin is, that it has led to the death of everything, that it causes unbelievable suffering, and that it is contagious.

Third is to show us that good can only come from God, and apart from God, not even the angel Lucifer can put together a working planet, having been labeled the ruler of this world. He demonstrates perfect justice, mercy, love, hatred, and a myriad of others.

Fourth is to put these three together; it shows how amazingly good and genius God is, that he is capable of saving us from sin but only by willingly going to the cross and taking our punishment, then showing his power by defeating death and bestowing his goodness on us.

How could God possibly love his enemies if he had no enemies?

Why does god need to show off to his lowly human of how great he is? I don't understand the motive of god creating this universe and man, ... etc!

Wrong! Wrong! Wrong!
99.999% of mutations are harmful..Mutations are usually deformities

Wrong! Most mutations don’t affect genes that encode for proteins, so they have absolutely no effect on the organism.

[mutations] are some modification of the genes that are already there.

Wrong! Genetic drift doesn’t modify gene sequences that “are already there”.

nobody goes to get X-Rays without a lead shield

Wrong! Everybody goes for their x-rays without a lead shield. X-ray pictures don’t look very interesting otherwise…

[evolution must explain] indeed how does non-life bvecome life

Wrong! Evolution has nothing to say about how life began.

Creationism and Darwinism co-existing, not!
the thing is that the Bible does not leave that option open. It starts off with “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” The Bible has man created, then through rebellion, death and sin enter the world. Evolution has millions of years of death and “struggle” before man. Jesus says in John 14:6 that He is the only way to God. Jesus also claims to be God. He doesn’t leave the option open to be a good teacher… He was either God or crazy. So in my opinion it is either creation or evolution not a mix.

Multiple Designers -> multiple gods
What is actually more probable is that MULTIPLE GODS created the universe.

If we stumbled across the remains of an ancient city, we wouldn’t ask “which PERSON build this?” but “which PEOPLE built this?” Without exception all non-trivial designs have been the work of more than one designer. Even the greatest solo inventors depend upon work undertaken by their peers and previous generations.

Let’s assume, for the sake of argument, that the universe *was* created by Intelligent Design, as Christians suggest — we cannot know how many designers were involved. Now, if you’re basing your thinking on “which it more probable” (to quote the above) then it would be much much much safer to make the working assumption that there were MULTIPLE DESIGNERS — multiple gods.

Of course you could argue that we cannot make assumptions about the design of the universe based upon the designs we see inside the universe, but even if that is so, we’re still left (in our ignorance) with a straight 50/50 chance between single and multiple designer gods.

So, a question to Christians… you claim the reason the universe must be designed is it is far far too complex to have arisen naturally, yet the greater the complexity the greater the likelihood for multiple designers. Where, therefore, is your independent proof that there is ONLY ONE designer (only one god)…?

WOW, there are lots of information and mis-information. How can one sort out the truth? Trust your bible or trust your scientific method?

Quotes

We have electricity, the internal combustion engine, the internet, antibiotics and we’ve put men on the moon. All examples, and there are many more, where science has got it right. To think that in the single case of evolution, science has got it wrong, is very strange indeed. - a comment to Evolution: A Fairy Tale For Grownups

Science got all these things right because of the rigorous process - scientific method. From Wikipedia; Scientific method refers to bodies of techniques for investigating phenomena, acquiring new knowledge, or correcting and integrating previous knowledge. To be termed scientific, a method of inquiry must be based on gathering observable, empirical and measurable evidence subject to specific principles of reasoning. A scientific method consists of the collection of data through observation and experimentation, and the formulation and testing of hypotheses.

Intelligent design / creationism fails the scientific method test and it only integrates with the bible.

(c) Yes. “And the Lord repented that he had made Saul King over Israel” (I Samuel 15:35). Notice that the above three quotes are all from the same chapter of the same book! In addition, the Bible shows that God repented on several other occasions:
i. “The Lord was sorry that he made man” (Genesis 6:6) “I am sorry that I have made them” (Genesis 6:7)

(b) No. True Christians cannot possibly sin, because they are the children of God. “Every one who believes that Jesus is the Christ is a child of God. (I John 5:1). “We should be called children of God; and so we are” (I John 3: 1). “He who loves is born of God” (I John 4:7). “No one born of God commits sin; for God’s nature abides in him, and he cannot sin because he is born of God” (I John 3:9). But, then again, Yes! “If we say we have no sin we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us” (I John 1:8)

They said God was on high and he controlled the world and therefore we must pray against Satan. Well, if God controls the world, he controls Satan. For me, religion was full of misstatements and reaches of logic that I just couldn`t agree with. - Gene Roddenberry

Images of Jesus

Do preachers want more people in heaven or in hell?

My guest is that they want more people to be condemned to hell.

When asked if someone has been good and nice the whole life but has never heard about Jesus (or their god), where will this someone end up, the answer mostly is heaven. The reason: because that someone was ignorant about god and hence should only be judged by s/he has done in life.

My question to these preachers is WHY then you tell me about your god. If I don't know, I won't need to go to hell. Since you don't have any good evidence to show to me that your god existed, the chances that you can convince me is pretty small. You deliberately tell me about this. So you are trapping me and want me to go to hell.

To that, we should say, DAMN you, preacher!

If it is true, it is shockingly uncivilized

This was posted to youTube over 1 year ago. If it was true, the only conclusion I can draw about USA is that some communities there were shockingly uncivilized.

Sharia Law

Definition: traditional Islamic religious law; it covers the totality of religious, political, social and private life making no distinction between religion and life, in other words between transgressions of moral rules (sin) and of social rules. [source]

Buddhist's way of thinking about the beginning and the end

I got this from an email subscription to [atheism]. Good point. Why are we so obsessed in knowing the beginning when we have more immediate problems to solve?

"... a man called Malunkyaputta approached the Buddha and demanded that the Buddha explain the origin of the universe before he would become a disciple of the Buddha. Then the Buddha said that he would not go into a discussion of the origin of the Universe. To him, gaining knowledge about such matters was a waste of time because a man's immediate problem was his own suffering and his task was to liberate himself from the present state of affairs. To illustrate this, the Buddha related the parable of a man who was shot by a poisoned arrow. This foolish man refused to have the arrow removed until he was told who shot the arrow, what he looks like, the kind of wood the arrow was made of and so on. The Buddha said that before the man could learn such information, he would be dead. Similarly, our immediate task is to be enlightened, not to speculate about the metaphysical."

I deny the existence of a creator god simply because "god" is only a placebo. If god created the Universe, who created god?

I reject a personal god because it is simply too elegant to suggest any god would disrupt the rules and laws governing the universe to answer my prayer.

I despite evangelists/preachers because either they are stupid as to believe in a god or if they know there is no god, they are hypocrite in spreading a false hope for their own benefit.

I admire scientists whose pain-taking hard work, repeated testing and verification, relentless search for objective truths, find cures to many human sufferings.

I envy artists who skillfully show us the beauty and glory of life, celebrate our good luck to be at this time and at this place.

Let us be good for goodness sake and enjoy life while we can.

What if there really is no god?

Daniel Florien asks the believers for an honest answer:
So we’re pretending that God doesn’t exist. What do you do? Do you throw away your current life to embrace drugs? Wreck your marriage and sleep with whores? Quit your job and go out and steal? Kill and rape people?

I have been an atheist all my life and hence I am not qualified to answer. I firmly believe that there is no god.

But I have been living an honest life, happily married to my only girl friend who has been my wife for 30+ years. I never have an affair, and we have raised a decent child. Needless to say, I have never raped anyone (pretending to rape my wife as a sexual fantasy may be the exception). I have killed some animals either because they were spreading diseases or for food (oops, a few for scientific experiments too). I have not kill any human yet. At the moment, I am taking quite a bit of drugs - to control my blood pressure and depression.

Religion as a moral standard is a joke! The bible may be morally advanced 2000 years ago. In today's standard, churches represent the repressing hypocrites.

Quotes

Theology, by diverting the attention of men from this life to another, and by endeavoring to coerce all men into one religion, constantly preaching that this world is full of misery, but the next world would be beautiful -- or not, as the case may be -- has forced on men the thought of fear where otherwise there might have been the happy abandon of nature. - Elbert Hubbard

Rationality back in politics

I am really glad to see politics getting free from the non-sense ideologies of the religious.

USA president had lifted the ban of the use of hundreds of new embryonic stem cell lines which *may* lead to treatment of major disorder such as Parkinson's disease and spinal injuries.

Yesterday, the Australian Federal government has overturned a ban (imposed by the Howard government in 1996) that prohibits using Australian foreign aid to support abortion in overseas nations.
The UN estimates that universal family planning could save the lives of as many as 175,000 women each year, Mr Smith said, adding about 68,000 women die annually as a result of unsafe abortions. [source]

Government policies should be made based on sound evidence. In both cases, no one is supporting the murdering of life. In the first case, embryonic stem cells from IVF treatment will be discarded after a certain of time. Why not use it for some human good. [I don't know exactly how the lines of available stem cells are defined. Here in Australia, I believe scientists in some states can use stem cells left over from IVF treatment.] In the second case, abortion is a hard decision for the woman already. When such a choice has been made, we don't need to make the process worse by forcing these poor women to go to illegal and often poor facility to do that.

Vatican vetos 'dot god' domain

A top-level domain (TLD), sometimes referred to as a top-level domain name, is the last part of an Internet domain name, that is, the group of letters that follow the final dot of any domain name. [source] Recently, the controlling body of TLD, ICANN was considering the adding of TLD such as
.catholic, .anglican, .orthodox, .hindu, .islam,
.muslim, .buddhist

The Vatican said they don't like the idea of some registrar or other group being given control of the TLD of a particular religious tradition, with ICANN forced to determine who gets to be the gatekeeper for each particular set of beliefs.

What do you think?

Quotes

The objections to religion are of two sorts - intellectual and moral. The intellectual objection is that there is no reason to suppose any religion true; the moral objection is that religious precepts date from a time when men were more cruel than they are and therefore tend to perpetuate inhumanities which the moral conscience of the age would otherwise outgrow. - Bertrand Russell

Atheist Today Poll

Does it concern you that President Obama will be a member of a church?
Yes, USA constitution requires the separation of politics and religion.
No, as long as he pay someone to go for him.
Yes, every church from every religion, belief system, ethical system or philosophical position should come to him one by one.
Yes, the country is so messed up that it would be irresponsible for the president to be wasting his time in a church.
No, it doesn’t concern me.
Yes, because all other churches which he is not a member will rain fire and brimstone upon the entire world.
